Unfortunately for me, a Cowboys fan, I find football season a depressing time of year. Although this summer was a bit of an exception, but all the action in the NFL and projections, and screenshots of the next Madden game usually get me pretty amped up in the off-season. The lockout saved me from high expectations. However, I did not enjoy complete amnesty from another year of anticipation and eventual let down of the usual Dallas Cowboy season opener. Even though I shook my head and knew the Cowboys game last Sunday night was going to be bad, I couldn't help but get my hopes up.
After missing the first quarter, I was delighted to see that the Cowboys were leading the New York Jets 7-0. I was completely surprised, only to be even more surprised as they kept playing good football against a good team. By about five minutes into the fourth quarter, the Cowboys had a 14 point lead. I was excited and confident, because a two possession lead is difficult to lose in only ten minutes; a team nearly has to attempt to fail in order to lose that lead.
Sure enough, through a string of painful mishaps, or divine miracles if one is a Jets fan, the Cowboys blew the lead and lost by a field goal kicked by a former player of theirs, Nick Folk. As confident as I had been at the beginning of the quarter, there was still a hint of despair, hiding in the back of my brain and the pit of my stomach. As the clock ticked on and momentum leaned toward the Big Apple, the seed of desperation grew exponentially. Frustration, anger, sadness, anxiety, dumbfoundedness all combined in one awful emotion Sunday night. I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt it, but I may be the only football fan to have said, "I wish there was still a lockout." I sometimes feel that I would rather have no football than the disappointment America's Team gives me year in and year out. I wish they were just a bad team like they were ten years ago, because then I knew what was going to happen, expectations never left me hanging.
Oh, Tony Romo, how opponents love to watch your meltdown, and casual observers laugh at your inability to finish games. I do sympathize with your misery, after all I am a Raiders fan, but at least they lost to a good team this year in the first week. Last year they lost to Washington. WASHINGTON!!! The team was a disaster last year and the lowly Cowboys could not pull it out. Just remember, they have 15 more games, and if not this year, there is always next year.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry man, no sympathy for cowboys fans, I have had two roommates in the past who were romo fans, and they just are not the type of people I like. But I am a titans fan, and the lockout doesn't seem to be helping my team at all.
