October is coming!!

Fall is finally settling in. Here in South Dakota, it is really kicking in. With fall comes football. Football's return makes me happy. The biggest thing that makes me happy is without a doubt the fact that the Major League post-season is swiftly approaching. Some of the division races are all but finished, meanwhile some are really heating up. My favorite team, the Texas Rangers are in a sweltering race against their division opponent, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The best part is they finish their respective seasons with none other than a three game series against eachother. YAY!

Football is Back

September has arrived, and with it, a new football season commences. This summer's lockout seemed to go on forever and at some points it looked like we would not see professional football this fall. However, the rich players and rich owners finally got their ducks in order and figured it all out. The end of the lockout and the beginning of the 2011 season made a lot of people happy.

Unfortunately for me, a Cowboys fan, I find football season a depressing time of year. Although this summer was a bit of an exception, but all the action in the NFL and projections, and screenshots of the next Madden game usually get me pretty amped up in the off-season. The lockout saved me from high expectations. However, I did not enjoy complete amnesty from another year of anticipation and eventual let down of the usual Dallas Cowboy season opener. Even though I shook my head and knew the Cowboys game last Sunday night was going to be bad, I couldn't help but get my hopes up.

After missing the first quarter, I was delighted to see that the Cowboys were leading the New York Jets 7-0. I was completely surprised, only to be even more surprised as they kept playing good football against a good team. By about five minutes into the fourth quarter, the Cowboys had a 14 point lead.  I was excited and confident, because a two possession lead is difficult to lose in only ten minutes; a team nearly has to attempt to fail in order to lose that lead.

Sure enough, through a string of painful mishaps, or divine miracles if one is a Jets fan, the Cowboys blew the lead and lost by a field goal kicked by a former player of theirs, Nick Folk. As confident as I had been at the beginning of the quarter, there was still a hint of despair, hiding in the back of my brain and the pit of my stomach. As the clock ticked on and momentum leaned toward the Big Apple, the seed of desperation grew exponentially. Frustration, anger, sadness, anxiety, dumbfoundedness all combined in one awful emotion Sunday night. I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt it, but I may be the only football fan to have said, "I wish there was still a lockout." I sometimes feel that I would rather have no football than the disappointment America's Team gives me year in and year out. I wish they were just a bad team like they were ten years ago, because then I knew what was going to happen, expectations never left me hanging.

America's sluggish action in the 1940's and the World Police

On September 1st, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. This is what historians mark as the beginning of the Second World War. Just as in WWI, Britain needed America's aid in defending Europe against the Germans. However, the United States spent two blissful years simply producing and sending supplies to Britain. Only after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor did the US help the ailing Brits and Soviets.

If America mobilized immediately and joined Great Britain and the Soviet Union the war very well could have been won much earlier. The powers that be at the top of our government recognized that. It has led to America's current policy--stick our nose in whomever's business want. Between our inaction of WWII and the breakout of the Cold War, the United States now attempts to officiate scrums all over the world.

It is no wonder that much of the world hates us--we can't keep to ourselves. In some cases it is perfectly clear that we must at least intervene, or announce our stance on an international issue. In others, however, we need to just let things play out, without criminalizing ourselves or being portrayed as a teenage girl who butts-in on other people's conversations.

America's attempt to make the world a better place may be successful, but at a cost. We are the World Police, and some countries hate us because of that.

iPhones make me sick

I have had it with iPhones. What is the big deal? Apple this and iPad that. This fool (Maxwell Schaffer) next to me can't even get a message with a verification code because he has no service. What a waste of money. Why would you even want to spend money on a fancy phone to use the internet when you are around computers all the time? DUH
